Cruising the Mekong Delta

This morning started by meeting our new local tour guide Ken.  We boarded a bus and headed down to a boat to take a little cruise down the Mekong Delta.  Ken was a wealth of information, and gave us a very detailed description of Vietnams history, and spoke a lot to what is currently going on in the country.

Ken was an interesting character and a lot of fun.  He was very easy going, and loved joking around.  I think his character is best summed up by the tattoo that he has on his arm.  It reads “It is better to give then receive, except in bed. – Queer as Folk”

We boarded the boat, and we began our delta cruise.  We saw the floating markets, and then stopped at a sugar factory/confectionary.  We saw the process for  dehusking rice, and making fresh popcorn.  We also saw them make rice noodles, rice paper, and caramel noodle treats.

The food was delicious.  Jourdan had the opportunity to try to make some rice noodle pancakes, and completely fucked it up.  At least it still tasted good though.  The drinking began when Ken had everyone take a shot of rice wine.  It was not so good, but it would not be the last of the drinking for the day.  MOP HIGH BAH, YOH!

We next headed to lunch at a world heritage family run restaurant and house, completely restored in the old Manadarin/Viet style.  The food was really good, the rice wine wasn’t.  We made our own spring rolls again, but the meat this time was from a whole fish.

We got back onto the boats and were taken down one of the canals where we had to get onto smaller boats that were manually paddled in order to reach the guesthouse.  Unfortunately for us, as soon as we got into the small boats, the rainy seasons afternoon storms came rolling through, and we got soaked.

Inside, we warmed up with some fruit, tea, rice wine shots, and more snake whiskey shots (way better then the rice wine).  Jourdan still wouldn’t go near it.  If that wasn’t bad enough for him, we next had some time to play with the family pet, named Mr. Cuddles.  The house pet was a 10 foot long, huge Mekong Python.  I was surprised Jourdan was still willing to stay at the guesthouse (Pictures to come)

This place was very remote, and Paul, Jourdan, and myself had to rough it just a little more then the girls did.

The evening was spent doing a lot of relaxing and a lot of drinking.  We saw a local band play some traditional music for us, and perform some songs.  For dinner, we were able to try rat and snake.  The rat was actually delicious, but there were a lot of little bones.  The snake was decent enough but I didn’t like that the vertebrae were still in there.  Jourdan even gave the snake a try.

The nighttime was spent drinking more.  There were lots of drinking games, and some crazy jungle juice type drink with a lot of red bull in it.  FUN TIMES.  I became known as Mr. Same Same, and Jourdan as Same Same brotha.  It was a good way to bond with the new group members.
